Careers in Switzerland

An occupation is an area of work learned through training or developed through experience. Occupations differ in their tasks, workplaces, responsibilities, training, and physical or mental demands. In Switzerland, vocational education and training is a central entry route. A vocational apprenticeship (Lehre) combines practical work in a training company with instruction at a vocational school (Berufsfachschule). Common qualifications in initial vocational education and training are the Federal VET Certificate (eidgenössisches Berufsattest), abbreviated EBA, and the Federal VET Diploma (eidgenössisches Fähigkeitszeugnis), abbreviated EFZ. They are based on different training profiles and enable further learning pathways. Alongside apprenticeships, there are general education schools, specialized middle schools, universities and other educational pathways. Which route is suitable depends on the career goal and personal strengths. After initial vocational education and training, specializations and higher professional qualifications are possible. A later career change is also normal because many skills are useful in several occupations. When choosing a career, interests alone are not enough. Skills, health, the desired daily routine, working hours, training requirements and direct experience of the occupation are also important. Trial apprenticeship placements (Schnupperlehren), internships, information events and conversations with professionals show what everyday work is really like. Less visible tasks and challenging aspects should also be discussed. Some occupations are regulated and require specific recognized qualifications. For foreign qualifications or a move into such an occupation, formal recognition must therefore be clarified.
