Disasters in Spain

Disaster management in Spain is commonly described as protección civil, or civil protection. It brings together public authorities, emergency coordinators, police, firefighters, health services, rescue teams, volunteers, and scientific or technical bodies. The responsible level depends on the scale and location of the event. Municipal and regional authorities often manage local emergencies, while wider incidents can require coordination across several administrations. Wildfires are a major seasonal hazard in forests, scrubland, and rural areas. Prevention includes respecting fire bans, avoiding sparks, keeping access routes clear, and leaving immediately when authorities order an evacuation. Intense rain can cause rapid flooding, especially in low areas, dry channels called ramblas or barrancos, underpasses, and roads near rivers. Water can rise quickly, so people should move to higher ground and never drive through floodwater. Heatwaves and drought can affect health, water supplies, agriculture, and fire danger. Children, older people, outdoor workers, and people with certain health conditions may need additional support. Earthquakes are possible, with differing levels of risk across Spain. Volcanic risk is particularly relevant in the Canary Islands, where monitoring and local emergency planning form part of normal preparedness. Coastal storms, high waves, snow, strong winds, and landslides can also disrupt travel and services. Warning signs, closures, evacuation orders, and instructions from Protección Civil or emergency services should always be followed. During a serious event, 112 is the central number for urgent help. Networks and roads may be overloaded, so a household plan, basic supplies, and more than one way to receive information can reduce confusion. Emergency systems can warn and assist many people, but they cannot remove every risk. Conditions may change faster than help can arrive, particularly on islands, in mountains, or in remote communities.
