Living in South Sudan

South Sudan lies in northeastern Africa and borders Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic. Around 8.3 million people live there. Vast savannas, rivers and the extensive Sudd wetlands shape the landscape. A mostly dry season is followed by a rainy season of varying length depending on the region; more rainfall occurs in the south than in the north. In Juba and other cities, people live in houses made from different materials, while in rural areas many families live in smaller settlements. Agriculture, livestock farming, fishing, trade and public services shape daily life. People travel on foot, by motorcycle, car or boat, and markets, visits and shared celebrations bring people together.
