School in South Sudan

South Sudan has a formal 2-8-4 school system. It includes two years of pre-primary education, eight years of primary school and four years of secondary school. Primary education is legally free and compulsory, but fees, distance, conflict, flooding, displacement and teacher shortages limit access in practice. Alternative Education System programmes provide accelerated, mobile or community-based pathways for learners who cannot follow the standard school structure.

Tip

Choose a school pathway according to the learner's age, previous schooling, location, mobility and ability to attend regularly. Treat operational status, total costs, travel conditions, teaching language, safety, disability access and continuity during conflict or flooding as decision points, not assumptions. Use an Alternative Education System programme when the standard P1 to S4 structure does not fit the learner's circumstances.
