Transport in Somalia

Somalia relies mainly on roads for movement within and between communities, while public transport is largely private, local and fragmented. Rail services are not currently operating, and air travel provides a long-distance alternative where a suitable flight is available. Road quality, rain, security conditions, checkpoints and local fees can change travel time and cost substantially.

Tip

Choose road transport for ordinary domestic movement only after checking current road, security and checkpoint conditions. Use air travel when the distance makes road delays costly and a suitable flight, airport status and required clearance are confirmed. Treat local fares, vehicle rules and access conditions as location-specific rather than relying on a nationwide assumption.
