Traditions in San Marino

Traditions in San Marino are inherited and recurring practices that connect public life, communities, families and cultural expression. The tradition system is established but fragmented. The Ufficio del Turismo, Dipartimento Istruzione e Cultura, Istituti Culturali, the Giunte di Castello, parishes, social centres, associations, the Federazione Balestrieri Sammarinesi, the Banda Militare and the Istituto Musicale Sammarinese each preserve or organize different parts of it. The annual cycle includes civic and religious occasions. The calendar includes Capodanno on 1 January, Epifania on 6 January, Sant'Agata and the commemoration of the 1740 liberation on 5 February, the Arengo of 1906 and Festa delle Milizie on 25 March, the transfer of the Capitani Reggenti on 1 April and 1 October, Easter, Festa del Lavoro on 1 May, Corpus Domini between May and June, Festa della Libertà on 28 July, Assunzione on 15 August, San Marino and the traditional founding of the Republic in 301 on 3 September, Tutti i Santi on 1 November, Commemorazione dei Defunti on 2 November, Immacolata on 8 December, Natale on 25 December and Santo Stefano on 26 December. Civic and religious elements often overlap in processions, masses and the display of relics; this describes their role as traditions, while religion itself is a separate subject. The nine Castelli are Acquaviva, Borgo Maggiore, Chiesanuova, Città di San Marino, Domagnano, Faetano, Fiorentino, Montegiardino and Serravalle. Each Giunta di Castello can support local celebrations and cultural activities. Examples include Festa del Castello, Festa dell'Uva, Festa della Castagna, Festa del Borgo, family events, parish festivals and local music. Dates, programmes and participation differ by Castello, association and year. A 2014 regulation requires the Giunte to report festivals and events involving social centres, parishes and associations. Family and life-cycle customs are more varied. The UO Stato Civile, Servizi Demografici ed Elettorali records births, marriages, citizenship and deaths. A birth must be reported within 10 days; a late report is referred to the Tribunal. A child may receive the paternal surname, maternal surname or both, with a maximum of two elements, and the choice for the first child binds the following siblings. Civil marriages and civil unions cost €50 for residents or citizens at the UO Stato Civile, €100–150 at a Casa di Castello, €150–250 at Palazzo Pubblico and €300–450 at other UNESCO or Castelli locations. Non-residents pay €350 at the UO Stato Civile and generally €550–850 at Palazzo Pubblico or other locations. Payment is made when the procedure starts. Baptisms and private wedding or funeral customs have no single nationwide official form; parishes, social centres and associations determine their own arrangements and charges. San Marino has no documented everyday national costume. Reconstructed medieval clothing appears in processions, the Palio, Medieval Days and San Marino Antiqua through the Federazione Balestrieri, the Corte and other historical-cultural groups. Public access is usually available, but participation as a performer depends on the association or event organiser, and some events require admission. Music traditions include the Federazione Balestrieri, with musicians, flag bearers, performers and crossbowmen, and the Banda Militare. The Banda Militare traces its official formation to 1843 as the Concerto Militare of the Compagnia Uniformata delle Milizie and performs at state ceremonies, including the flag-raising ceremonies on 1 April and 1 October, as well as festivals. The Istituto Musicale Sammarinese offers basic, ordinary and amateur pathways, pre-academic study, a first-level three-year academic programme, choir, ensemble music and Musicagiocando for children from 0–7 or 8 years. Admission depends on registration, the calendar and available places; course fees follow the current fee regulations. Craft traditions are also fragmented. The San Marino Arts and Crafts Group and historical craft stalls at Medieval Days or San Marino Antiqua provide functional equivalents for pottery, textiles, jewellery and reproductions. San Marino has no documented nationwide professional order or compulsory certification for these activities. Workshop access and prices depend on the provider and event. San Marino ratified the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on 17 November 2022. No San Marino element is documented as registered on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage lists, and a periodic report is scheduled for 15 December 2027. Living ceremonies, associations, school cooperation, the Istituto Musicale Sammarinese, the Castelli and historical reenactment support transmission. In 2026, the Torneo dei Castelli involved all nine Castelli, the Federazione Balestrieri and five primary classes. New formats such as San Marino Antiqua, Matsuri and contemporary cultural events show that traditions can be adapted without treating every modern event as an unchanged historic practice. The UNESCO World Heritage status of the Historic Centre of San Marino and Mount Titano concerns living cultural tradition and civic autonomy; it is not the same as registration on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage lists.
