Language in Samoa

Samoan, also called Gagana Samoa, is Samoa’s main language for family life, villages, churches, culture and public life. English is widely used alongside Samoan in government, schools, business, media and international affairs. Samoa therefore operates with two closely connected public languages, although their practical use depends on the institution and situation.

Tip

Choose Samoan or English according to the institution, purpose and consequences of misunderstanding. Confirm the working language and interpretation arrangements for government, court, election and education matters instead of assuming that official status guarantees identical service everywhere. Give Samoan priority when cultural continuity, family participation or community understanding is central, while preparing for stronger English use in secondary education, business and international settings.
