Romania has a national emergency management system that connects central authorities, county services, municipalities, rescue teams, police, firefighters, medical services, and volunteers. The Department for Emergency Situations, known as Departamentul pentru Situații de Urgență or DSU, coordinates important parts of this system, while the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations and county inspectorates, called IGSU and ISU, carry out many practical operations. The main natural hazards in Romania are earthquakes, floods, landslides, severe storms, wildfires, drought-related fires, and winter weather. Earthquakes are especially important because the Vrancea region can produce strong and widely felt tremors. Flooding can affect river valleys, low areas, and places where water drainage is poor. Authorities can warn people through sirens, local announcements, official messages, weather warnings, and RO-ALERT notifications sent to mobile phones. Romanian weather warnings commonly use yellow, orange, and red levels to show increasing danger. An alert may advise people to stay indoors, avoid a place, prepare to evacuate, or leave immediately. The emergency number 112 is used in Romania when there is an immediate danger to life, health, safety, or property. The caller should state what happened, where it happened, how many people may need help, and how they can be reached. Calm and precise information helps dispatchers send the right service. During an earthquake, protect your head and body under a sturdy table or beside an interior wall, stay away from windows, and expect aftershocks. Do not use an elevator, run onto stairs during shaking, or return to a damaged building until authorities say it is safe. During floods, move to higher ground, avoid walking or driving through moving water, and keep away from bridges, riverbanks, and fallen electrical wires. During a fire, leave by a safe route, close doors behind you if possible, and call 112 from a safe place. A basic emergency plan should include a meeting place, important phone numbers, a way to receive alerts, and a plan for children, older people, disabled people, and pets. A small emergency kit can contain drinking water, ready-to-eat food, medicines, a first-aid kit, a torch, spare batteries, warm clothing, copies of important documents, and a power bank. Emergency services can reduce harm, but they cannot prevent every disaster or reach every place at once. Warnings may be incomplete, roads may be blocked, and local conditions can change quickly, so personal preparation and following official instructions remain important.
