Unemployment in Kyrgyzstan

A person can apply in person at the territorial employment office responsible for the place of residence. Registration is free and is normally processed on the same day. The usual documents are a passport, a work book or duplicate and proof of qualifications. A first-time jobseeker without a profession generally provides a passport and education document. If the office cannot offer suitable work within 10 calendar days, it can grant official unemployed status under the registration rules. Unemployment benefit begins only after that wage-continuation period ends. People who do not qualify for insurance-based support often rely on direct vacancies, temporary work, household support, paid public works, a social-contract program for vulnerable households or short vocational training. These alternatives do not have the same legal or financial effect as an unemployment benefit. National statistics distinguish survey-based unemployment from registered and official unemployment.
