Portugal lies on the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula, facing the Atlantic Ocean. Its history was shaped by the meeting of inland European traditions with seafaring and Atlantic connections. Before Portugal became a kingdom, the region was home to different peoples and was influenced by Rome. Roman rule left roads, towns, language roots, law, and the name Lusitania, although the ancient province did not exactly match modern Portugal. After Roman rule, Germanic kingdoms and Muslim-ruled societies shaped different parts of the peninsula. Arabic and Islamic influences remain visible in place names, architecture, agriculture, food, and vocabulary. The Kingdom of Portugal formed during the Christian expansion of the Middle Ages. Borders gradually moved south, and Lisbon became an important political, commercial, and cultural centre. From the fifteenth century, Portuguese voyages connected Europe with Africa, Asia, and Brazil. These routes brought knowledge, goods, and cultural exchange, but they were also linked to conquest, colonial rule, forced labour, and the Atlantic slave trade. Portugal later experienced political instability, monarchy, and republican government. The Estado Novo was an authoritarian dictatorship that lasted for much of the twentieth century and limited political freedom. The Carnation Revolution on 25 April 1974 ended the dictatorship and opened the way to democracy. Decolonisation, social transformation, and new political rights followed. Modern Portugal is a democratic country with a strong European and Atlantic identity. Understanding its history means holding together achievements, cultural connections, and the harm created by empire and unequal power.
