Languages in Pakistan

Pakistan has many languages, and language use often changes between home, school, work, government, and media. A person may understand several languages without reading or writing all of them. Urdu is the national language and is widely used for communication across provinces. It is also an important language in education, public life, television, newspapers, and everyday conversation. English has an official and professional role in Pakistan. It is common in higher education, law, administration, medicine, business, science, and formal documents. Regional languages carry local history, family identity, poetry, music, and community life. Important examples include Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Brahui, Saraiki, Hindko, Kashmiri, and Shina.
