Pakistan has many artistic traditions because its regions, languages, histories, and communities are diverse. Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtun, Baloch, Kashmiri, Gilgiti-Baltistani, and other local styles can use different colors, materials, symbols, and stories. Calligraphy is important in Islamic visual culture. Arabic and Persian letter forms may decorate mosques, homes, books, signs, ceramics, and paintings. Calligraphic art can be devotional, educational, decorative, or highly personal. Miniature painting developed through older court and manuscript traditions and later became a modern art form. Artists may combine fine detail with subjects from history, poetry, politics, nature, or daily life. Modern miniature art does not have to copy the past. Truck art is one of Pakistan's most visible decorative arts. Trucks and buses may carry bright colors, flowers, birds, landscapes, portraits, poetry, and protective or hopeful symbols. Similar visual ideas appear on rickshaws, shops, furniture, and household objects. Textile arts include weaving, embroidery, printing, mirror work, shawls, carpets, and decorated clothing. Designs often show local identity and may be taught within families or made by specialist craftspeople. The work can carry beauty, income, status, and cultural memory. Pottery, woodwork, metalwork, stonework, jewelry, and tile work connect art with useful objects. A bowl, door, bracelet, or floor pattern can be both practical and artistic. Skills are often shaped by local materials and climate. Architecture and gardens also express artistic ideas. Mosques, shrines, forts, homes, markets, and modern buildings use space, light, patterns, tiles, brick, wood, and calligraphy in different ways. Religious and cultural rules influence how people decorate sacred places. Pakistan's contemporary artists work with painting, photography, film, sculpture, digital media, design, theater, music, and installation. Art can celebrate identity, question power, remember history, or show ordinary life. Access to training, galleries, funding, and safe public space remains unequal.
