Shopping in Norway

Norwegian supermarkets are often called dagligvarebutikker or matbutikker. They sell food, household goods and some personal-care products, while kiosks usually offer a smaller range at convenient locations. Shopping centres and specialist shops cover clothing, electronics, furniture and other goods. Rural areas may have fewer shops, so people often plan trips or combine shopping with other errands. The Norwegian currency is the krone, written NOK or kr. Most shops accept payment cards, and contactless payment is widely used. Cash is less central than in many countries, but a small amount can still be useful. Prices normally include value-added tax, so the shelf price is generally the amount you expect to pay. Some goods, such as food, services and imported products, may follow different tax or fee rules. Norwegian shops often use self-service checkouts. You scan each item, follow the screen instructions and pay before leaving, while some products may require staff assistance. Keep receipts for expensive purchases and learn the difference between a complaint about a faulty product, a voluntary return policy and a guarantee. Consumer protection exists, but the exact process depends on the type of purchase.
