History in Norway

Norway has been inhabited for thousands of years by people who adapted to coasts, valleys, forests, mountains, and the far north. The Sámi are the Indigenous people of Norway and have their own long history, languages, livelihoods, and cultural traditions. During the Viking Age, people from Norway travelled widely as traders, settlers, sailors, and raiders. This period influenced stories about Norway, but most people at the time lived ordinary lives as farmers, fishers, craftspeople, and families. Christianity became increasingly important during the medieval period. Kings, churches, towns, law, and trade helped connect different regions, although local identities and social differences remained strong. Norway later entered political unions with Denmark and Sweden. These unions affected government, language, trade, and cultural life, while people in Norway continued to develop regional customs and a sense of national identity. The Constitution of 1814 is a central symbol of modern Norwegian history. Norway then had a union with Sweden before becoming an independent kingdom in 1905. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries brought industrial growth, urbanisation, emigration, new transport, and political movements. Fishing, shipping, farming, hydropower, and later petroleum all influenced the economy and the shape of society. Norway was occupied by Germany during the Second World War. The war affected civilians, resistance, politics, the Jewish population, prisoners, and many parts of everyday life. After the war, Norway built strong public institutions and expanded welfare services. Historical debates today also include Sámi rights, minority experiences, gender equality, migration, colonial power, and the balance between national stories and local memory.
