Language in Niger

Niger has a highly multilingual language landscape. Article 12 of the Charte de la Refondation, published on 31 March 2025, lists Arabic, Buduma, Fulfuldé, Gourmancema, Hausa, Kanuri, Tagdal, Tamajaq, Tassawaq, Tubu and Zarma-Sonrai as spoken languages, names Hausa as the national language, and identifies English and French as working languages. Hausa has the widest national and cross-border reach, while other languages remain central to regional, community, religious and cultural life.
