Living in Nauru

Nauru is a small island country in Micronesia in the central Pacific, with around 12,704 people. A narrow coastal zone surrounds a higher-lying island interior partly shaped by former phosphate mining. The tropical climate brings warm temperatures year-round, a wetter rainy season and often heavy showers; the coast is characterized by coral reefs and palm trees. Most people live in settlements along the ring road and travel by car or minibus between homes, workplaces and shops. Employment is found mainly in public administration, trade, services and fisheries-related activities. Sports, family visits, and church or community gatherings are common leisure activities in many places; everyday life differs noticeably between the coast and the higher island interior.
