History in Moldova

Moldova's history reflects changing states, borders and identities between the Prut and Dniester rivers. The territory formed part of the medieval Principality of Moldavia, the Russian Empire, Romania and the Soviet Union before the Republic of Moldova became independent in 1991. Regional histories, including those of Transnistria and Gagauzia, add distinct political and cultural perspectives.
