Arrival in Mali

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Mali, known locally as the Ministère des Affaires Etrangères et de la Coopération Internationale, and Malian diplomatic missions handle official visa information. Whether a visa is required depends on nationality, passport type and residence, so check the official eligibility process before travel. Holders of ordinary UK passports require a visa and use an online application and payment process with an electronic entry permit. Since 1 January 2026, visa issuance for US nationals is suspended except for limited exceptions. Do not apply one nationality rule to every traveler. A passport must remain valid for the planned entry and stay. Travelers aged 9 months or more must carry a yellow-fever vaccination certificate. Under the International Health Regulations, the certificate remains valid for life. Yellow-fever vaccination is also recommended for travel south of the Sahara. Malaria risk exists throughout Mali year-round, so arrange a medical consultation before departure, discuss prevention and obtain health insurance that reflects the planned itinerary and available medical care. Carry the passport, visa or entry authorization and yellow-fever certificate during travel. Declare dutiable or prohibited goods. Exporting cultural or archaeological objects requires a permit. Bamako airport applies intensive security checks and vehicle searches; arrange a transfer in advance. Flights can be cancelled or diverted at short notice, and fuel shortages can cause queues. Travel to airports outside Bamako and overland travel carry very high security risks, and official advisories may recommend avoiding all travel. Temporary accommodation and a local contact, telephone number, email address, address, means of support and repatriation guarantee can be required for the initial stay dossier. The guarantee may require a deposit within 15 days, generally based on the cheapest applicable ticket; documented exemptions can apply. Exact visa and stamp fees and processing times were not published in the reviewed official material. For foreigners over 18, an autorisation de séjour temporaire is required after three months. A stay request for six months or longer is submitted after entry through the Police aux Frontières, the border police. The file can require the passport, a police record issued less than three months earlier, a medical certificate issued less than two months earlier and, where required, a certified French translation. An online dossier reference and status email may form part of the process. A visa de séjour can be issued for a maximum of one year and renewed. An immigrant applying for a carte de résident must submit the application within 15 days after entry; the card is valid for five years. A certificat de résidence is a separate local document that may be requested in residence-related procedures. A change of residence requires an administrative visa before the move and validation within 48 hours after arrival at the new place. Foreign nationals must present required documents when authorities request them. Work and establishment permissions are separate matters and may require additional authorization. Use CFA francs, also called XOF or FCFA; cash remains dominant, cards have limited acceptance and ATMs are concentrated mainly in Bamako, with outage and fee risks. Medical capacity is limited, especially outside Bamako.
