Living in the Maldives

The Maldives lie in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and India. The island nation consists of many flat coral islands and atolls; around 515,696 people live there. Turquoise lagoons, reefs, and narrow sandy beaches shape the natural environment. The tropical climate is warm year-round, with a more humid monsoon season and sometimes heavy rain. Many people in Malé live close together in multistory buildings, while smaller islands generally have low-rise houses and quieter roads. Boats, ferries, and domestic flights connect the islands. Jobs are available, among other sectors, in administration, fishing, construction, services, and tourism. Leisure time is often spent with family, by the water, or participating in community activities; living conditions differ considerably from one island to another.
