Language in Liechtenstein

German is the state and official language of Liechtenstein. Standard German is used in administration, law, schools, writing and formal public participation, while Liechtenstein dialects dominate much everyday speech and local cultural life. Other languages are used in families, communities, education, media and work, but they do not have the same official status.

Tip

Use Standard German for authorities, courts, school matters and residence or citizenship procedures, and treat dialect as an informal and cultural resource rather than a substitute for formal German. Choose support according to the situation: a German course for required language evidence, school-based DaZ support for children, HSK for heritage-language maintenance, and an approved interpreter when a legal or administrative matter cannot be handled reliably in German. Do not assume that English, dialect or an interpreter removes a formal German requirement or that language support is free.
