Art in Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein uses terms such as Kulturschaffen for professional cultural production, Bildende Kunst for visual art and Darstellende Kunst for live forms such as theatre, dance, music theatre, cabaret and object theatre. Audiovisuelle Medien include artistic film and video work. Baukultur covers architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, planning and the character of built places. These areas are part of the public cultural funding system when the project has a Liechtenstein connection and meets quality requirements. The Amt für Kultur coordinates cultural matters but does not provide direct project financing for artistic projects. Applications for project contributions, work contributions, publications, translations, travel expenses, start-up contributions, further-training contributions, studio stays, mentoring, performance agreements, awards and recognition payments generally go to the Kulturstiftung Liechtenstein. Funding is subsidiary, there is no legal entitlement, and support normally covers at most 50% of project or further-training costs. Eligible applicants can be individuals and private organisations in literature, music, performing arts, visual art and audiovisual media. A Liechtenstein connection and either Liechtenstein citizenship or residence in Liechtenstein are generally required, depending on the funding instrument. An application should usually arrive at least four weeks before the project begins. Monthly deadlines apply. A complete submission normally includes a concept, budget, financing plan, timetable and a CV, portfolio or references. The foundation board, which has five to seven members, decides on applications. A complaint to the government is available only for a decision that is unlawful or inconsistent with the case file. The Werkjahrstipendium supports six or twelve months of artistic work and is generally awarded once per year; it requires Liechtenstein citizenship or at least five years of residence. The Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in Vaduz is the state museum for modern and contemporary art. Its international collection reaches from early modern art to the present, with a focus from 1945 onwards and holdings associated with Duchamp, Arte Povera, Postminimalism and installation. The Hilti Art Foundation presents a private collection of classical modern and contemporary art in a building connected to the museum; admission is free on Wednesdays. Thirteen sculptures are permanently installed in public places across the country, and the museum offers programmes for children, schools and adults. Kunstraum Engländerbau is a non-commercial exhibition space for contemporary art from Liechtenstein and the surrounding region. It is provided by the state, administered by the Kulturstiftung and does not buy or sell art. Professional artists and curators can apply individually or as a group with a digital dossier of no more than 20 MB or 14 A4 pages. The dossier should include a spatial concept, materials, two or three project examples, work samples, four programme elements, a cost estimate and a CV. A specialist commission selects projects. Contracts are normally concluded about six months before opening. The project receives CHF 10,000 in three instalments of CHF 4,000, CHF 4,000 and CHF 2,000; additional costs and sponsorship remain with the project organisers. Admission is free, with public access and supervision seven days a week from 13:00 to 17:00. The Kunstgesellschaft Liechtenstein is an association that organises tours, lectures, art trips and educational activities. Membership is open to anyone interested in art and does not constitute a state professional licence. The local commercial market consists of private galleries, including Galerie am Lindenplatz in Vaduz, alongside purchases by the Kulturstiftung, loans and association activities. Prices, sales contracts and usage rights are agreed individually. Liechtenstein has no centrally regulated state access system for galleries or the art market. Temporary imports and exports of artworks can use a Carnet ATA through the Liechtenstein Chamber of Commerce and Industry; the Kulturstiftung may provide a simple guarantee in suitable cases. The Kunstschule Liechtenstein in Nendeln is state-recognised. Its one-year Gestaltungsvorkurs, also called a preparatory course, prepares participants for creative vocational training or an art and design university. Admission requires completion of compulsory schooling, a portfolio of 20 to 30 works, a practical assignment and an interview. The programme runs for five school days with eight lessons per week and covers art history, drawing, painting, three-dimensional work, photography, video, digital media, graphic layout, animation and portfolio development. The published costs are CHF 80 for the portfolio review, CHF 120 for the admission interview, CHF 10,000 annual tuition and about CHF 2,000 for materials and excursions. People living in the EEA or EU may qualify for a CHF 6,500 contribution from the Amt für Berufsbildung, subject to the applicable conditions. The Liechtensteinische Musikschule offers instruments, singing, theory, accompanying practice, ensembles, youth choir, GrooveLab, digital audio workstation work, computer notation, songwriting, composing, arranging and studio work. The published semester tariffs from August 2023 list CHF 713 for 50-minute individual lessons for children and young people and CHF 1,101 for adults. The youth tariff applies until the end of the twentieth year; students and trainees can apply for the corresponding reduction. Social reductions are available. In 2026, residents of Liechtenstein aged 20 or over with income up to CHF 65,000, or CHF 77,000 for married couples, can apply for a CHF 500 continuing-education voucher. Literature is supported through organisations such as Literaturhaus Liechtenstein in Schaan, which offers readings, writing workshops, publications, literary trips, a literature channel, the Junges Literaturhaus and exhibitions. Access is available through events, workshops and membership. Annual membership costs CHF 60 for an individual, CHF 90 for a couple and CHF 30 for pupils or students. Literature means artistic text production here; general media reporting belongs to a different subject. Film and audiovisual art are supported as cultural activities, including through Filmfest Liechtenstein in Schaan, which offers cinema and open-air screenings, often in the original version with German subtitles. The announced next festival is scheduled for August 2027, with SKINO as a venue. TAK Theater Liechtenstein in Schaan presents drama, dance, music theatre, cabaret, puppet and object theatre, storytelling theatre and multimedia forms. The state contribution for 2026 to 2029 is CHF 2,250,000 per year. junges THEATER liechtenstein is a non-profit theatre school with its own productions and courses, around 160 school projects per year and 14 theatre groups. It also offers inclusive activities; some courses do not require previous stage experience or German-language skills. Published example fees are CHF 485 for ages five to seven, CHF 610 for ages 14 to 21 and CHF 440 for an inclusive course from age 12. The Amt für Kultur and monument protection authorities advise on protected cultural property, conservation and use. Early advice is recommended before submitting a building application. Alterations or restoration of protected cultural property require a written application before work starts, with project, cost, schedule, photographic and land-register documents. State architecture or art-in-building competitions for public buildings follow their individual calls for applications. Photography, video and digital media are taught at the Kunstschule and appear in exhibitions at Kunstraum Engländerbau, the Kunstmuseum and other cultural settings. No separate national digital-art institution has been established in the available evidence; these existing platforms provide the relevant functions. Artistic access therefore depends on the activity. Museums and public exhibitions are open to visitors, Kunstraum Engländerbau has free admission, music education requires registration or a trial lesson, Literaturhaus works through events and membership, and TAK operates through ticketed performances. Funding, admissions, teaching places, contracts, sales and usage rights follow the rules of the specific institution or agreement. Leisure activities, general media policy and historical topics belong here only when they directly concern artistic practice, an audiovisual artwork or the necessary collection, monument or cultural context.
