History in Liechtenstein

The earliest evidence shows at least 7,000 years of settlement in the territory of present-day Liechtenstein. Neolithic settlement began around the fifth millennium BCE, followed by Bronze Age and Iron Age communities. Important archaeological evidence includes Lutzengüetle, Schneller, Borscht, the Roman fort at Schaan, Villa Nendeln and early medieval graves. Archaeology examines material remains, while written history uses charters, official files, municipal and parliamentary minutes, church records, private and association archives, photographs, films, sound recordings, museum collections and oral testimony. Foreign archives also matter because Liechtenstein’s history developed through close regional and European connections. Medieval history includes the creation of the County of Vaduz in 1342 and the territory’s status as directly subject to the Holy Roman Empire from 1396. Between 1434 and 1437, the Upper Country and the County of Vaduz were united with the Lower Country and the Lordship of Schellenberg. Local history also follows changes from the Werdenberg family to the Brandis, Sulz and Hohenems families, together with the development of local law, courts, churches, settlements and municipalities. Johann Adam I bought the Lordship of Schellenberg in 1699 and the County of Vaduz in 1712. On 23 January 1719, Emperor Charles VI united both territories as the Principality of Liechtenstein. Wars and revolutionary events in 1794 and 1799 affected life under princely rule. The modern political history of Liechtenstein includes sovereignty after joining the Confederation of the Rhine in 1806, membership in the German Confederation from 1815, the customs treaty with Austria in 1852 and the constitutional framework of 1862. Liechtenstein abolished its military in 1868 and ended the customs treaty with Austria in 1919. The Constitution of 1921 remains a central foundation of the state. The customs treaty with Switzerland followed in 1923, and the Swiss franc became the legal currency in 1924. Social and economic history shows the transition from a predominantly rural society to one shaped by trade, industry, services and finance. The first industrialization began around 1861, a second industrial expansion took place from the 1930s, and financial services grew from the 1920s. These changes affected farmers, workers, employees, companies and the emerging middle class. Gender history, migration history, welfare history, education history, municipal history and the development of national identity provide additional ways to understand everyday life and social change. The First World War contributed to domestic and foreign political upheaval that continued into the crisis of 1926. During the Second World War, Liechtenstein remained neutral and without armed forces between Switzerland and the German Reich. Historical research examines the risk of annexation, the National Socialist movement, refugees, the wartime economy, assets, euthanasia and political purges. Later milestones include women’s right to vote and stand for election at national level in 1984, membership in the Council of Europe in 1978, the United Nations in 1990, EFTA in 1991, the European Economic Area and the World Trade Organization in 1995, Schengen and Dublin participation in 2011, the 300th anniversary in 2019 and membership in the International Monetary Fund in 2024. There is no single history office or uniform standard procedure for researching the history of Liechtenstein. The Amt für Kultur and its archaeological services, the Liechtensteinisches Landesarchiv, the Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum, the Liechtenstein-Institut, the Historischer Verein für das Fürstentum Liechtenstein, the eleven municipal archives and the Hausarchiv Wien at the Fürstliche Sammlungen each hold different material or provide different forms of access. The Liechtensteinisches Urkundenbuch and e-archiv.li provide digital access to selected historical sources. Museums, guided tours, publications, local associations and oral-history projects support public understanding beyond archival research. The Liechtensteinisches Landesarchiv is generally available for people with a legitimate research interest. Advance notice is recommended when many records are needed. Research takes place in the reading room. The general protection period is 30 years. Personal records are generally protected until 10 years after the person’s death or 100 years after birth, although an application may allow a shorter period. Copies and digital reproductions can cost money, while archive use itself is free. The temporary opening schedule recorded for 2026 is Tuesday and Thursday from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 13:30 to 17:00. The Liechtenstein-Institut library has no general access requirement, but advance notice is requested; it is used on site and does not lend books. Its recorded opening hours are Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 17:00. Copies cost CHF 0.10 per black-and-white page and CHF 0.20 per colour page. Archaeological work has additional rules. Movable archaeological finds belong to the state. Searching with a metal detector is prohibited unless the Amt für Kultur grants an exception permit. A research plan should therefore distinguish between a visit to an exhibition, the use of archival records, the study of published sources, an archaeological project and the collection of oral testimony. Each activity involves different institutions, permissions and forms of evidence. Historical scholarship, also called historiography, has changed over time. Peter Kaiser published Geschichte des Fürstenthums Liechtenstein in 1847. The Historischer Verein für das Fürstentum Liechtenstein, founded in 1901, publishes a yearbook that remains a central platform for research. Georg Malin advanced source-critical scholarship from 1953. The Liechtenstein-Institut has broadened research to political, social, municipal, wartime, gender, economic and memory history. Earlier work focused strongly on political and constitutional history; later research has given more attention to women, everyday life, social groups, small communities and the ways history is remembered. The source base is extensive but institutionally divided. Researchers should compare archaeological evidence, official records, private material, local records, foreign holdings and personal testimony instead of treating one source as complete. Interpretations concerning princely rule, neutrality, the National Socialist period, the financial centre, women’s rights and national identity require careful source criticism because memory, institutional position and later public narratives can influence how events are described. The Liechtensteinisches LandesMuseum presents the development from the Stone Age to the present through themes including settling, protecting, ruling, celebrating, creating and using, with the IndustrieWelt exhibition showing industrial history.
