Living in Libya

Libya lies in North Africa on the Mediterranean and extends far into the Sahara; around 6.7 million people live there. The coastal plain is more densely populated than the vast, dry and hot interior. Along the coast, winters are mild and more humid and summers are warm, while the desert receives hardly any rainfall and temperatures can fluctuate greatly. Many people live in cities such as Tripoli, Benghazi or Misrata in apartments or houses and usually travel by car. Jobs are found, among other sectors, in oil, trade, public service and small businesses. In cities, markets, cafés, family visits and shared meals are part of everyday life; in oases and rural areas, greater distances and simpler infrastructure have a stronger influence on life.
