Living in Kiribati

Kiribati is located in the central Pacific and consists of 33 widely scattered atolls and islands around the equator. Around 115,847 people live there. Lagoons, coral reefs, and narrow, flat strips of land shape the landscape. The tropical climate brings warm temperatures year-round, changing rainy seasons, and, in some places, longer dry periods. Many people live in close quarters on South Tarawa; there, they often get around on foot, by motorcycle, bus, or small boat. On the outer islands, life is more strongly shaped by villages, fishing, coconut palms, and community activities. People work in areas including administration, trade, education, fishing, and handicrafts. Families, churches, sports, and shared meals shape leisure time in many places.
