History in Iceland

Icelandic history traces the island's development from settlement and medieval society to the modern republic. The Alþingi was established around 930, Iceland later came under Norwegian and Danish rule, and the country became a sovereign kingdom in 1918 before founding the republic in 1944. Archaeology, written sources and oral traditions reveal both everyday life and changing political institutions.
