Living in Iraq

Iraq is located in Western Asia between Turkey, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and has around 38.4 million inhabitants. The Tigris and Euphrates shape fertile plains, while mountains extend across the north and dry desert landscapes stretch across the west and south. Summers are usually very hot and dry; in the north, the climate is cooler and wetter. Many people live in urban neighborhoods in apartments or houses with courtyards, and in smaller settlements in rural areas. In cities, cars, taxis and minibuses are important means of transport. Work, trade and agriculture shape daily life; free time is often spent with family and friends, in cafés or at markets.
