Study in Iceland

The Icelandic higher-education system includes the University of Iceland, University of Akureyri, Bifröst University, Reykjavík University, Hólar University College, Agricultural University of Iceland and Iceland University of the Arts. Four are state institutions and three are private non-profit institutions. The Ministry of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education is responsible for accreditation and the national quality framework, while each institution sets its own programme requirements and academic rules. The usual entry qualification is a stúdentspróf, the Icelandic upper-secondary matriculation examination, or an equivalent qualification. A university may also require subject-specific preparation, an entrance examination, a status examination or a limited number of places. A person without a stúdentspróf may sometimes qualify through aðfararnám, an approved preparatory pathway. Applicants with foreign qualifications should expect the institution or the relevant country-specific process to review certificates, official transcripts and, where required, certified translations. Applicants choose a programme and apply directly to the institution. Application dates, required documents, language requirements and admission limits vary by programme. The Island.is university-education search portal helps locate programmes. The University of Iceland generally allows an applicant to apply for one undergraduate programme and up to two master’s programmes. Medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and some other programmes may use selection procedures or entrance examinations. Icelandic is the main teaching language, while several programmes, especially at master’s level, are taught in English. A full-time study load normally equals 60 ECTS credits per year, or 30 ECTS credits per semester. ECTS is the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System used to measure study workload. Bachelor’s programmes commonly require 180 to 240 ECTS credits and take three to four years. Master’s programmes commonly take two years after a bachelor’s degree and include a substantial thesis or research project. Doctoral study is available at the University of Iceland, Reykjavík University and the Agricultural University of Iceland in cooperation with the University of Iceland; a doctorate at the University of Iceland typically takes three to six years and usually requires a master’s degree. Fees depend on the institution and programme. At the University of Iceland, the annual registration fee is 100,000 ISK and spring enrolment costs 75,000 ISK. The University of Iceland has stated that students starting in autumn 2026 do not pay tuition there. The Icelandic state has authorised tuition fees for students from outside the EEA, EFTA and Switzerland from autumn 2027, but the amount was not yet fixed in the available information. University of Iceland doctoral students and people holding permanent residence are excluded from that authorisation. The Menntasjóður námsmanna, usually called MSNM, can provide loans for accredited higher-education programmes leading to a degree. Monthly payments may cover living costs, housing, child support and tuition according to the applicable loan rules, and income affects the amount. Scholarships and research grants are also available. Loan repayment normally begins one year after studies end and is paid monthly; deferral or exceptions may apply in specific difficult circumstances. Students follow the institution’s rules on registration, academic progress, examinations and re-registration. Student housing depends on the institution and location. Students can usually seek advice or representation from student unions and rights offices. Complaints generally move from an internal review to the institution’s student complaints board and then, where applicable, to the Board of Appeal. Academic grades are not automatically re-examined simply because a student disagrees with them. A student residence permit normally requires unconditional admission and full-time study equivalent to 30 ECTS credits per semester. The applicant must show secure support of 259,951 ISK per month and health insurance covering at least 2,000,000 ISK; after three months of legal domicile, the person enters the national health-insurance system. Since 2026, valid student-permit holders can work without a separate work permit, up to 60% of full-time work during the term and full-time between terms. Self-employment is not permitted under this arrangement. Graduates receive a degree and a Diploma Supplement. Icelandic universities have issued Diploma Supplements since 2005. ENIC/NARIC Ísland can evaluate foreign higher-education qualifications, individual ECTS credits, micro-credentials and post-secondary non-tertiary education. Its academic evaluation is free and advisory, may take several weeks and does not replace a professional licence. Regulated professions require separate recognition or authorisation from the responsible authority.
