Arrival in Iceland

Arriving in Iceland involves entry documents, suitable accommodation, address registration, access to healthcare and contact with municipal services. Iceland has no single arrival office; Ísland.is, Registers Iceland, Iceland Health, municipalities and other public services handle different steps. A registered legal domicile, called lögheimili, is central for access to many services.

Tip

Treat arrival in Iceland as a sequence of linked checks, with a registrable address and healthcare coverage as the main priorities after entry. Keep temporary accommodation separate from legal domicile, and do not assume that a kennitala or electronic identity by itself creates service rights. Prepare customs, identity, insurance and family-service documents before travelling so that delays, uncovered healthcare costs and failed registrations are less likely.
