Language in Hungary

Hungarian belongs to the Uralic language family. It is related at a great distance to Finnish and Estonian, but speakers of these languages cannot normally understand one another. Hungarian uses a Latin-based alphabet with additional letters and marks. Accents are meaningful, and letter groups such as cs, gy, ny, sz, ty, and zs represent their own sounds. Stress normally falls on the first syllable of a word. Spelling and pronunciation are relatively consistent, although unfamiliar vowels and consonants require practice. Hungarian builds many words by adding endings to a base. These endings can express relationships that English often shows with prepositions, and vowel harmony helps determine the form of many endings. Hungarian has no grammatical gender for the ordinary third-person pronoun. Word order is flexible, but movement within a sentence can change focus and emphasis. Politeness affects greetings, pronouns, names, and verb forms. Tegezés is informal address, while magázás is a common form of formal address, and the expected choice depends on relationship and setting. Hungarian personal names are traditionally written with the family name first and the given name second. In international settings, Hungarians may reverse the order, so forms should label each field clearly. Minority and community languages, including Romani, German, Slovak, Croatian, Romanian, Serbian, and others, form part of Hungary's linguistic life. Sign language and the languages of newer residents are also used. English and other foreign languages can help in some places, but they are not guaranteed. Clear speech, patience, written information, and translation support can prevent misunderstandings.
