Religion in Hungary

Christianity has influenced Hungarian state history, education, architecture, music, calendars, and family customs. Saint Stephen, or Szent István, links Christian memory with the foundation of the Hungarian kingdom. The Roman Catholic Church is historically prominent. Catholic practice may include Mass, baptism, confirmation, marriage, funerals, saints' days, pilgrimages, and major feasts, but individual participation differs. The Hungarian Reformed Church, commonly called református, has deep roots, especially in parts of eastern Hungary. Its worship and church design generally place strong emphasis on Scripture, preaching, and simplicity. The Lutheran tradition is commonly described as evangélikus in Hungarian. Orthodox and other Christian communities also contribute to the country's religious landscape. Jewish communities have played an important role in Hungarian urban, commercial, intellectual, artistic, and religious life. The Holocaust destroyed many lives and communities, while Jewish worship, culture, education, and remembrance continue. Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, and other religious communities are also present. Some people combine heritage with limited practice, follow a personal spirituality, or identify with no religion. Religious buildings range from village churches and monasteries to synagogues, prayer spaces, and modern community centers. A building may function as a place of worship, heritage site, memorial, or several of these at once. Religion may appear in weddings, funerals, food choices, clothing, school life, and public holidays. The correct practice depends on the individual community and occasion, not simply on the label of a religion.
