The Greek Orthodox Church is the most visible religious tradition in Greece. Churches, monasteries, icons, feast days, and Orthodox ceremonies appear throughout the country. Orthodox worship uses prayer, chanting, incense, candles, icons, and repeated ritual actions. Visitors may attend many services, but they should respect the space as a place of worship. Easter, called Pascha, is a major religious and family season. Christmas, Epiphany, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, saints’ days, and local feast days also shape community calendars. A name day may celebrate the saint connected with a person’s given name. For some people it is an important social occasion, while others observe it only lightly or not at all. A panigyri is a local feast, often connected to a patron saint or church. It may combine worship, food, music, dance, trade, and community gathering. Religion can mark baptism, marriage, death, and remembrance. Civil options also exist, and many families combine religious custom with personal or secular choices. Muslim, Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, and other communities form part of Greece’s religious landscape. Their histories and local presence differ across the country. Religious identity does not reveal a person’s private beliefs or political views. Freedom of conscience includes sincere faith, mixed practice, uncertainty, and nonbelief.
