Pets in Greece

Dogs, cats, and other companion animals are common in Greece. Responsible care includes suitable food, water, shelter, exercise, veterinary treatment, and safe supervision. Identification and veterinary records are central to responsible ownership. A veterinarian can explain the applicable microchip, registration, vaccination, and travel documentation for an individual animal. Greece's warm conditions can create risks from heat, insects, and parasites. Prevention should be based on veterinary advice suited to the animal, location, and season. Pet access rules vary among rental homes, apartment buildings, transport services, beaches, shops, and accommodation. Owners should confirm the actual rule instead of relying on assumptions. Dogs should be controlled in public, and owners should clean up after them. Respect for neighbors is especially important in dense apartment areas. Stray cats and dogs are visible in many parts of Greece. Feeding an animal may help briefly, but coordinated support through a veterinarian, municipality, or animal welfare group can address health and population needs more effectively. Travel within Greece may involve ferries, aircraft, buses, or private vehicles. Each operator can apply practical carriage conditions, so planning must begin before departure. Emergency preparation matters during fires, earthquakes, severe heat, or evacuation. A carrier, lead, water supply, identification, and copies of veterinary records should be ready.
