Living in Greece

Greece lies in southeastern Europe on the Mediterranean and encompasses a mountainous mainland as well as numerous islands; around 10.7 million people live there. Rocky coasts, olive groves and fertile plains characterize the landscape. Summers are usually hot and dry, while temperatures can become considerably cooler in the north and in the mountains during winter. Many people live in apartments, especially in the densely populated Athens metropolitan area, while houses and close-knit neighborhoods are more common in smaller towns. In everyday life, people get around by bus, car and ferry; employment includes services, trade, agriculture, shipping and tourism. In their free time, family, sharing meals and life by the sea or in squares play an important role.
