Surroundings in Germany

Surroundings include both natural and human-made areas. They include forests, rivers and soil, as well as homes, roads, parks and commercial areas. Germany is densely populated and has diverse landscapes. Cities and villages lie among farmland, forests, river valleys, coastal areas and mountain landscapes. The immediate living environment is often called the residential environment or neighbourhood. Its quality depends, among other things, on green spaces, traffic, noise, air, cleanliness, safety and access to local services. Cities and municipalities shape many parts of their local surroundings. They plan residential areas, roads, paths, playgrounds, parks and public squares, and manage many municipal facilities. Nature and environmental protection aim to preserve important habitats and natural resources. Protected areas, well-maintained green corridors and connected habitats provide space for plants and animals. Transport, construction, agriculture and business change the surroundings. They create homes, jobs and connections, but can also use up land, divide habitats, and cause noise or pollution. Many responsibilities are divided across several levels. The federal government and federal states set the general framework, while rural districts, cities and municipalities make many decisions locally. Residents can help shape their surroundings. Common ways to do so include reporting concerns to the municipality, taking part in consultation processes, joining neighbourhood initiatives and behaving considerately. A liveable environment requires balancing different needs. Housing, mobility, services, recreation, climate adaptation and nature protection must be brought together so that an area remains usable over the long term for different people.
