A romantic relationship in Germany arises through the free decision of the people involved. No official registration is required, and both people may end the relationship at any time. People get to know one another through friendship circles, everyday life, leisure activities, or digital services, among other settings. During the stage of getting to know each other, it is often clarified gradually whether both people want a committed relationship. Partnerships can be organized in different ways. Couples may live separately, share a household, have a long-distance relationship, marry, or consciously remain unmarried. Expectations about fidelity, closeness, sexuality, money, household responsibilities, and the future also differ.
