History of Germany

For a long time, Germany was not a unified nation-state. The Holy Roman Empire comprised numerous principalities, cities, and ecclesiastical territories under separate rulers. The Reformation in the 16th century changed religion, politics, education, and daily life. The divide between Catholic and Protestant territories left lasting regional differences. In the 19th century, national movements, industry, and cities grew. The founding of the German Empire in 1871 created a German nation-state under Prussian leadership. The First World War brought violence and hardship and ended the monarchy. The following Weimar Republic was the first parliamentary democracy for all of Germany, but it suffered severe political and economic crises. In 1933, the Nazis established a dictatorship. They persecuted and murdered millions of people, especially in the Holocaust, launched a criminal war, and destroyed democratic and rule-of-law structures. After the Second World War, Germany was occupied and divided in 1949. In the west, the Federal Republic of Germany emerged as a parliamentary democracy; in the east, the German Democratic Republic emerged as a socialist state led by a ruling party. The peaceful revolution in the GDR and the fall of the Berlin Wall opened the way to reunification. Since 1990, Germany has again been one state, though some experiences and effects of division continue. Today, Germany sees itself as a federal democracy and part of Europe. The memory of dictatorship, war, and persecution shapes civic education, commemorative culture, and the protection of human dignity. History is visible not only in major political events. Buildings, monuments, family stories, regional customs, and museums show how people lived in different periods.
