Study in Finland

Finland has a dual higher education system. Universities, called yliopisto, and universities of applied sciences, called ammattikorkeakoulu or UAS, offer different but complementary routes. Universities emphasize scientific or artistic research and research-based teaching. Their degree paths commonly progress from bachelor's studies to master's studies, with doctoral education available through universities. Universities of applied sciences emphasize professional skills and cooperation with working life. Their programmes often include practical projects, work placements, and a thesis connected to an occupational field. Admission depends on the programme and may consider earlier qualifications, entrance examinations, certificates, assignments, interviews, or other selection methods. Applicants must check the exact requirements for their chosen programme. Programmes are taught in Finnish, Swedish, or English. Even in an English-language programme, learning Finnish or Swedish can improve access to placements, part-time work, professional networks, and life outside campus. Study usually combines courses, independent work, group projects, assessment, and a final thesis or equivalent project. Students are expected to plan their time and take responsibility for progress while using available guidance. Higher education institutions may offer study counselling, accessibility arrangements, academic support, student wellbeing services, and career guidance. The form and eligibility for support vary between institutions. A degree can open professional and further-study opportunities, but it requires sustained time, money, and independent effort. Applicants should examine both the academic content and the everyday practical plan before committing.
