Religion in Fiji

Fiji has a plural religious landscape that includes the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma, Catholic and Anglican churches, Seventh-day Adventist and Assembly of God communities, Hindu organizations such as the Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha and Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, the Fiji Muslim League, Sikh communities and other faith groups. The local term lotu is commonly used for religion or faith, while iTaukei and Indo-Fijian communities have different historical and institutional connections to religious life. The 2017 census recorded a population of 884,887. The accessible official religion table uses 2007 figures and recorded 539,536 Christians, 233,393 Hindus, 52,520 Muslims, 2,577 Sikhs, 7,073 people reporting no religion and 2,172 people reporting another religion. The available official material does not provide a supported updated religious breakdown for 2017. Sections 4 and 22 of the Constitution protect religious freedom. The state may not prefer or impose a religion, and religious belief does not override the Constitution or other law. People may worship, observe, practise and teach individually or in communities, subject to limits connected with other people's rights and freedoms, public safety, public order, public morality, public health and nuisance. No person may be compelled to act against their belief or to take an oath contrary to it. Local faith bodies set many practical details, including congregation access, worship schedules, donations, instruction and religious rites. Fiji has no single national religious authority identified in the available framework. Religious communities and denominations may establish and manage schools if they meet legal standards. Religious instruction is permitted, but teachers cannot be forced to act against their conscience. A parent or guardian may request a full or partial exemption from religious instruction, and a pupil cannot be compelled to participate in another religion's ceremony or a ceremony connected with no belief. The Ministry of Education approves, recognizes or registers new and changed schools and programmes. Faith-based school networks include institutions associated with the Fiji Muslim League, Sanatan Dharam, TISI Sangam, Arya Samaj and the Sikh Association. Fees and faith-specific teaching arrangements vary locally, with no national tariff established in the available information. The 2026 national public-holiday calendar lists Good Friday on 3 April, Easter Saturday on 4 April, Easter Monday on 6 April, the Prophet Mohammed's Birthday on 24 August, Diwali on 9 November and Christmas Day on 25 December. A religious observance that is not listed in the national calendar, such as Eid, may still be significant to a community but does not receive the same national public-holiday status. Worship times and local celebrations remain organized by the relevant faith body. Religious rites for births, marriages and deaths are mainly congregation-specific, while the legal civil layer is separate. A legally recognized marriage generally requires the parties to be at least 18, a notice of intention, a declaration that the parties have met the applicable residence requirement of at least seven days before notice, and a ceremony conducted by the Registrar-General, a District Registrar or a registered Marriage Officer. A special licence may be available. A registrar's ceremony requires at least two witnesses, and registration with the civil birth, death and marriage system creates the legal record. A certified marriage copy costs 15 VEP, a birth or death copy costs 10 VEP, late birth registration costs 20 VEP and a decorated certificate costs 50 VEP. Religious ceremony fees and timing are not centrally standardized. Faith dialogue in Fiji is organized through cooperative initiatives rather than a statutory central interfaith authority. The National Faith Leaders' Dialogue in 2025 was organized by the Pacific Conference of Churches and the Fiji Council of Churches, with participation from Christian, Hindu and Muslim bodies. Government and Police consultations with faith groups in 2025 also addressed sacrilege and protection of places of worship. These forums support cooperation but do not replace the legal powers of the state or the rules of individual faith communities.
