Religion in Ethiopia

Religious life varies strongly by region. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, commonly called the EOTC, has a particularly strong presence in Tigray and Amhara. Islam is especially prominent in Afar, Somali and parts of Oromia. Protestant churches are significant in Gambella, the former SNNP area, parts of Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz. Addis Ababa and other urban areas are religiously plural. Waaqeffanna is an indigenous Oromo religion. Beta Israel communities are associated especially with Amhara and Gondar, Kechene and Addis Ababa, while Rastafari communities are visible particularly in Addis Ababa and Shashemene. Religious affiliation does not automatically determine ethnicity or political position. The 2007 national census recorded 43.5% Orthodox, 33.9% Muslim, 18.5% Protestant, 0.7% Catholic, 2.7% traditional and 0.6% other affiliations. No more recent reliable national religious census is established, so these figures may no longer describe the current population accurately. Major institutions include the EOTC, the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (EIASC), the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, the Ethiopian Kale Hiwot Church and the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia (IRCE). The Ministry of Peace, through its Directorate of Faith and Religious Affairs, works with religious bodies, registers religious organizations and supports dialogue and conflict prevention. IRCE connects several major communities, while the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission has involved religious institutions in reconciliation and consensus-building. Religious practice can include worship, prayer, teaching, fasting, processions, pilgrimages, church or monastery visits and mosque attendance. EOTC liturgy is primarily conducted in Ge'ez, and the Ethiopian calendar shapes many observances. EOTC fasting and Easter, called Fasika, are central practices. Muslim communities observe Ramadan, Jumu'ah, Mawlid, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Under Proclamation No. 1334/2024, national religious holidays include Meskel on 27 September, Christmas on 7 January, Epiphany or Timkat on 19 January, Good Friday, Easter, Mawlid, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Islamic dates follow the lunar calendar. Public institutions and private institutions generally close on religious public holidays, and the holidays are paid, although emergency services remain available. Article 11 of the Constitution separates state and religion and provides for mutual non-interference. Article 27 protects the freedom to choose, change, teach and practise a religion publicly or privately and prohibits coercion. Parents may provide religious and moral education to their children. Restrictions require a legal basis and a relevant purpose such as public safety, health, education, morality, peace or protection of another person's rights. Religious defamation and incitement are legally prohibited. A religious organization seeking legal registration applies to the Ministry of Peace's Directorate of Faith and Religious Affairs. Typical materials include a founding charter, founders' identification documents, a permanent address, board and meeting information, financial information, the proposed name and logo and planned branches. Local publication normally creates a 20-working-day objection period. Registered organizations generally renew at least every five years and submit annual activity and financial reports. Current reports refer to thresholds of 1,000 members for a religious entity and 500 for a ministry or association, but older and newer requirements differ, so the Directorate should confirm the applicable threshold before filing. No reliable uniform national registration fee is established. Legal registration can support applications for worship land and cemeteries. The federal state owns land, while allocation also involves regional and local authorities; annual local land taxes vary by zone. Worship and ritual activities are commonly supported by community or institutional donations rather than a standard state payment. Religious schools may operate under church or mosque auspices, while public and private non-religious schools do not provide religious instruction or prayer. Religious education institutions may include a secular component overseen by the Ministry of Education. EOTC church-school traditions can include prayer, memorisation and study of Ge'ez, the Bible, church history, theology and canon law; access, fees and recognition depend on the institution. Life events can include baptism, naming or blessing rituals, communion, confession, church weddings, Muslim marriage and prayer rituals, funerals and memorials. A religious ceremony does not automatically replace civil registration. Marriage requires the free and full consent of the spouses, and religious or customary marriages may receive legal recognition under applicable law. Religious or customary dispute processes require the parties' consent, and Sharia courts address personal-status matters when both parties are Muslim and consent. They do not replace the ordinary courts for general criminal and civil cases. Access is not uniform across Ethiopia. Reports from 2023 documented violence against religious centres and communities, including EOTC, Muslim and Protestant communities, with mosque destruction, displacement and attacks by state and non-state actors reported particularly in Oromia, Amhara, Central Ethiopia and Tigray. Safety, transport, infrastructure and conflict conditions can determine whether a person reaches a place of worship, school, cemetery or religious authority. Conflicts involving religion may also involve ethnicity, politics and resources, so they should not be explained by religion alone.
