Languages in Spain

Spanish is an official language throughout Spain and is often called español or castellano. Both names are widely understood, although personal and regional preferences can differ. Several autonomous communities also have co-official languages. Important examples include Catalan or Català, Valencian or Valencià, Galician or Galego, and Basque or Euskara. These languages are not merely private or historical subjects. In their territories they may be used in education, public administration, media, culture, and everyday work. Other recognised regional languages and local varieties also form part of Spain’s linguistic life. Their legal position and practical use are not identical in every place. The most useful language to learn depends on where a person lives and what they need to do. Spanish provides broad communication across the country, while a regional language can be important for school, community life, or certain jobs. Language courses are offered by public language schools, adult education services, universities, municipalities, associations, academies, and online providers. Courses may focus on daily communication, formal study, professional use, or examination preparation. An attendance certificate is not automatically the same as a recognised proof of language level. Learners who need evidence for study, work, or administration should ask which examination or certificate will be accepted. Real progress combines structured study with regular use. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing should all be practised in situations connected to daily life.
