School in Spain

Spain’s school system is divided into age-related educational stages. Educación Infantil covers early childhood, Educación Primaria provides primary education, and Educación Secundaria Obligatoria is usually called ESO. Primary education and ESO form the central compulsory school pathway. ESO is commonly taught in a secondary school known as an instituto, while a primary school is often called a colegio. After ESO, students may enter Bachillerato, vocational education called Formación Profesional, or other programmes suited to their situation. Bachillerato is an academic route that commonly supports access to higher education. Schools may be public, publicly funded private schools known as concertados, or fully private. Their admissions processes, services, educational approach, and possible family costs are not identical. Education responsibilities are shared between national authorities and the autonomous communities. Regional authorities manage many practical matters, including enrolment procedures, calendars, curriculum elements, and language arrangements. Spanish is used throughout the country, but some communities also teach in or through a co-official regional language. Families should understand the school’s language model and available support for new learners. School allocation often considers the family’s address and locally defined admission rules. Moving families should contact the education authority or school office responsible for their municipality or autonomous community. Schools assess progress and communicate with families through reports, meetings, and support plans. Regular attendance, family communication, and early discussion of learning or language needs help children settle well.
