Shopping in Egypt

Neighborhood shops are central to shopping in Egypt. A small grocery may be called a baqala, while bakeries, produce sellers, pharmacies, and specialist shops often operate separately. Supermarkets offer marked prices and a broad selection in one place. Traditional markets and souqs provide fresh food, household goods, clothing, and local products, but the experience may require more conversation. Bargaining is common for some market goods, souvenirs, and informal services. It is less suitable where prices are printed, scanned, or clearly fixed. Cash is widely useful, especially at small shops and markets. Cards and digital payments are available in many formal businesses, but acceptance is not universal. Product quality and storage conditions can vary. Check packaging, condition, quantity, and any printed dates before paying, particularly for food and medicine. Weights are commonly given in kilograms and grams. Learning Arabic numbers and the names of basic units makes it easier to check quantities and prices. Receipts are valuable for costly goods, warranties, exchanges, and disputes. Ask about the return conditions before buying an appliance, electronic item, or furniture. Shopping locally can be convenient and socially rewarding. Its limits include uneven stock, unclear prices in informal settings, and differences between imported and locally made products.
