Nature in North Korea

North Korea contains extensive mountain, forest, river, wetland and coastal ecosystems. About 80% of the country is mountainous, around 73% is temperate forest, and water surfaces cover about 6% of the territory. Nature protection combines reserves, biosphere reserves, internationally recognized wetlands, species conservation and regulated resource use, while access and responsibilities vary by site and zone.

Tip

Treat nature access and resource use in North Korea as site- and zone-specific, not as a nationwide public entitlement. Define the purpose and location first, then verify the responsible body, authorization, restrictions, costs and timing instead of relying on assumptions. For conservation planning, give current site evidence and boundary quality more weight than headline area totals because mapped coverage and management information are limited.
