Living in Djibouti
Djibouti lies in the Horn of Africa on the Gulf of Aden and at the entrance to the Red Sea; around 958,920 people live there. The country is characterized by dry plains, volcanic landscapes, salt lakes, and a long coastline. The climate is generally hot and low in rainfall, while conditions near the sea are often windy and somewhat milder at higher elevations. Many people live in the capital, Djibouti City, in residential buildings, smaller rental apartments, or densely built-up urban districts. Minibuses, taxis, and private vehicles shape daily travel. Work is concentrated mainly in the port, trade, services, and transport. Outside the capital, nomads and families also live in smaller settlements, where livestock farming, fishing, and local markets play a greater role in daily life.
