Living in Cyprus

Cyprus lies in the eastern Mediterranean, south of the Turkish coast, and has around 1.2 million inhabitants. Coastal plains, dry hilly landscapes and the forested Troodos Mountains shape the island. Summers are usually hot and have little rainfall, while winters are milder and wetter; snow can lie in the mountains. In cities, many people live in apartments, while in villages they also live in detached houses. Because places are spread far apart and the bus network is developed unevenly, people often use cars. Employment is found, among other sectors, in services, trade, tourism, agriculture and shipping. Everyday life ranges from cafés and waterfront promenades to family visits and trips to mountain villages.
