Living in Comoros

The Comoros lie as a volcanic archipelago in the Indian Ocean, northwest of Madagascar and near the East African coast; around 832,322 people live there. A tropical, warm climate year-round, humid rainy seasons, and drier months shape the islands. Grande Comore is characterized by younger volcanic landscapes, Anjouan is mountainous and densely populated, and Mohéli is smaller and especially green. Many people live in simple stone or concrete houses, often with metal roofs. In everyday life, they get around on foot, by minibus, taxi, or boat between the islands. Agriculture, fishing, trade, and services are important areas of employment. Family visits, markets, shared meals, mosque communities, and football are part of leisure activities in many places.
