Unemployment is called 失业, or shiye, in China. It can follow dismissal, resignation, contract expiry, business closure, graduation without a job, or the end of flexible work. China does not have one single payment available to every person without work. Support can involve unemployment insurance, public employment services, vocational training, local assistance, family support, and personal savings. Unemployment insurance is called 失业保险, or shiye baoxian. Eligibility generally connects to participation in the employment-based insurance system and the circumstances in which employment ended. Unemployment registration can help a person enter local employment services and document job-seeking status. Procedures are administered locally and may connect with identity, residence, household registration, and previous employment records. Public employment services may provide vacancy information, job matching, career guidance, training information, or support for particular groups. Universities, community offices, online platforms, recruiters, and personal networks also play important roles. China's hukou, or household registration, can affect how people interact with local public systems. Migrant workers and people living away from their registered home may need to clarify which office and location handles their case. Losing a job also affects practical matters beyond income. A person may need to examine social insurance continuity, housing, residence status, school or family plans, debt payments, and access to work-related accounts. Foreign nationals face a separate immigration issue because residence authorization may be linked to employment. They should quickly clarify how the end of employment affects their documents and ability to remain or take another job. A useful response begins with collecting termination documents, checking final pay, registering where appropriate, protecting essential insurance arrangements, and starting a structured search. Early action usually preserves more options than waiting.
