School in China

School education in China is mainly organized by educational stage and local administration. Public schools form the central system, while private and specialized schools also exist. Compulsory education is called yiwu jiaoyu and written 义务教育. It generally includes primary school and junior secondary school, although the local arrangement of school years can differ. Children commonly study Chinese, mathematics, physical education, arts, moral and civic learning, science, and other subjects appropriate to their stage. Foreign-language teaching usually becomes part of the curriculum during the school years. After junior secondary school, students may follow general senior secondary or vocational routes. Admission and placement can depend on academic records, examinations, local policies, and available places. The gaokao is the well-known national higher-education entrance examination taken near the end of general senior secondary education. It is important for many university applicants, but it is not the only educational or career route. School allocation and enrollment are administered locally. Residence registration, actual residence, guardianship, school capacity, and rules for children moving between places may affect the required procedure. The school year commonly has two semesters, with lessons, homework, assessments, school activities, and breaks. Daily schedules and expectations vary by school, age, and locality. Families should rely on the responsible local education office and the intended school for enrollment instructions. Documents, transfer rules, language support, and options for children with additional needs should be checked early.
