Communication in China

Standard Mandarin, called Putonghua, is the main shared spoken language in China. Many people also use regional varieties or other languages with family and within their local community. Written Chinese connects communication across many speech varieties. Saving names, addresses, and essential requests in Chinese characters is therefore highly practical. Messaging apps are central to personal and work communication. Text, voice messages, group chats, calls, payment functions, shared files, and service accounts may all appear in the same app. WeChat, commonly called Weixin in Chinese, is widely used for everyday contact. Newcomers should separate essential groups from optional notifications so important messages are not lost. Communication may be more indirect when open disagreement could embarrass someone. The idea of mianzi, or face, concerns dignity, reputation, and respectful treatment in social situations. Titles and roles can matter, especially in formal settings. Using a person's family name with an appropriate title is often safer than becoming informal too quickly. Silence, a vague answer, or a delayed response does not always mean agreement. Important arrangements should be confirmed with concrete details such as date, place, responsibility, and expected result. Translation tools are useful but imperfect. Short sentences, screenshots, examples, maps, and written confirmation reduce misunderstandings better than long machine-translated paragraphs.
