Living in Chad
Chad lies in the heart of Africa and is a landlocked country between Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger. Around 15.5 million people live there. The Sahara stretches across the north, the dry Sahel zone lies in the central region, and savannahs characterize the south. More rain falls around Lake Chad and in the south, while heat and long dry seasons define the north. Many people live in simple houses in cities such as N’Djamena or in mud-brick houses in rural areas. Livestock farming, agriculture, trade and urban services shape working life. Depending on the region, people get around on foot, by motorcycle, bicycle or minibus; markets, family visits and communal celebrations are part of leisure time in many places.
